Making Waves
News from the world of Marine Conservation

The North Atlantic right whale population is fragile and threatened by both ship strike and entanglement in fishing gear, including Maine lobster gear. Both threats must be addressed to save this endangered species. This article out of Maine takes a closer look at the stalling of ship strike protections for whales and the influence of large shipping interests. Maine lobstermen should be preparing to abide by regulations currently in place requiring them to change some of the rope they use to catch lobster to make Maine waters safer for whales.

Ocean Conservancy shark expert, Sonja Fordham, supports the Shark Conservation Act of 2008 and the efforts of Congresswoman Madeleine Bordallo to help save vulnerable populations from extinction in this article from Discovery News.

In honor of Evel Knievel, be an EcoDaredevil: Dr. Wallace J. Nichols shares how we can take brave steps for our environment.

A federal plan that would protect endangered Right Whales along the East Coast has been blocked by the White House for more than a year. The rule would impose speed limits on ships near whale feeding and calving grounds. Since the rule was proposed, at least three whales have died, and two injured by ship collisions.

Support Ocean Conservancy by joining our wine club
Ocean Conservancy Wine ClubEdna Valley Vineyard is located in the wine country of California's Central Coast, just south of beautiful San Luis Obispo and famed Morro Bay, and five miles from the rugged coast. The Edna Valley Paragon Vineyard soils are rich with ancient marine deposits and Edna's east-west lying valley is uniquely affected by the ocean climate - and ideally suited for fine wine production. Join our wine club and for every quarterly wine shipment of Edna Valley Vineyard wines, a contribution of $5 will be donated to Ocean Conservancy.
